The Petroleum Development Corporation has announced plans to significantly increase the number of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling stations in Dar es Salaam and the Coast regions.
This expansion aims to boost the number of stations from the current two to 30 within the current financial year, addressing the rising demand for cleaner and more cost-effective energy solutions.
Energy Permanent Secretary Felchesmi Mramba made this announcement during a visit to the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF) 2024. He stressed the government’s dedication to enhancing CNG infrastructure, facilitating a smoother transition from traditional fuels to natural gas.
Strategic Expansion Locations
The new CNG stations will be strategically placed in high-demand areas such as Muhimbili, Kibaha, Sinza, Mwenge, Goba, Mbezi Beach, Mbagala, and the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). The expansion will be led by the Petroleum Development Corporation in collaboration with private sector partners to ensure widespread coverage and accessibility

Currently, the existing CNG stations at Muhimbili National Hospital and the Ferry station in Kigamboni are supplied by truck deliveries. The addition of new stations will greatly increase the capacity to meet the needs of motorists who are converting their vehicles to CNG
Addressing Conversion Challenges
Despite the benefits of CNG, challenges remain, including high vehicle conversion costs and the limited number of existing filling stations. Experts recommend increased government incentives and policy adjustments to reduce conversion costs and encourage more motorists to switch to CNG
The Petroleum Development Corporation has also called for private investors to help construct and operate new filling stations. This public-private partnership model is expected to expedite the expansion process and improve service delivery across the region
Environmental Benefits
The shift towards more CNG filling stations supports Tanzania’s environmental goals. Natural gas is a cleaner alternative to petrol and diesel, producing fewer emissions and helping reduce air pollution. This transition aligns with the government’s efforts to mitigate the effects of global fuel price fluctuations and promote sustainable energy solutions
Future Plans
Looking forward, the government plans to expand CNG availability beyond Dar es Salaam and the Coast regions. A CNG mother station at Mlimani City is also planned to facilitate natural gas distribution to other parts of the country
