President Donald Trump has proposed that the United States take control of Gaza, aiming to turn the war-torn region into a thriving hub he described as the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
remarks have sparked immediate backlash from across the Middle East, including from powerful regional players like Saudi Arabia, with whom Trump has sought to build closer ties with Israel.
Trump’s plan, unveiled during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggests that the U.S. would oversee the redevelopment of Gaza, creating jobs and infrastructure that could benefit the broader region. “We’re going to develop it, create thousands of jobs, and make it something the entire Middle East will be proud of,” Trump told reporters, evoking his experience as a real estate developer.
However, the proposal has been met with scorn from various quarters. A spokesperson for Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza, dismissed the idea as “absurd,” warning that it could stoke further unrest in the region. “Trump’s desire to control Gaza is unrealistic and reckless, and ideas like this only fuel the conflict,” said Sami Abu Zuhri, a representative of Hamas.
This bold proposal follows Trump’s earlier suggestion that the U.S. should take charge of resettling the over two million Palestinians living in Gaza, relocating them to neighboring countries. Referring to Gaza as a “demolition site,” he indicated that the U.S. would take a hands-on role in addressing what he described as the region’s dire situation.
The plan represents a stark departure from the traditional U.S. stance, which has long supported the notion of a two-state solution—where Gaza would be a part of a future Palestinian state alongside the West Bank. For decades, the international community, including the United Nations, has backed this approach as the key to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Trump’s suggestion has raised concerns that it could undermine the peace process and lead to further instability in the region. Palestinian leaders, as well as critics within the international community, argue that such proposals ignore decades of diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a peaceful resolution.
The lack of concrete details surrounding Trump’s plan has only fueled uncertainty about its practical implications. With tensions already running high due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, many worry that his comments could worsen the situation rather than provide a solution.
