The National Development Corporation (NDC) has opened bids for the development of a soda ash processing plant in the Engaruka Basin, located in Monduli District, Arusha Region.
This project, expected to cost $400 million, marks a significant milestone in Tanzania’s efforts to expand its mineral processing industry.
Originally, the project was set to be located near Oldonyo Lengai by Lake Natron. However, environmental concerns, particularly the area’s importance as a breeding site for the lesser flamingo, led to the relocation to Engaruka Ward. The new site offers vast soda ash reserves without posing a threat to sensitive ecosystems.
The Tanzanian government has compensated about 300 families who lived near the Engaruka site, allowing them to relocate and clearing the way for the project’s commencement. This step reflects the government’s efforts to balance industrial progress with the welfare of local communities.
Engaruka Basin, situated approximately 160 kilometers northwest of Arusha City, is set to become a major hub for mineral processing. NDC, a government-owned entity responsible for implementing strategic industrial projects, emphasized that the selection of investors will be based on a rigorous and transparent evaluation process.
According to the NDC statement, proposals will be judged on several factors, including clarity and feasibility, financial and technical capacity, sustainability measures, and management expertise. These criteria aim to ensure the project attracts capable partners who can deliver long-term benefits.

The soda ash plant is poised to boost Tanzania’s economy by creating jobs, generating foreign exchange revenue, and fostering industrial growth. Soda ash, a key ingredient in manufacturing glass, detergents, and chemicals, is in high demand globally, positioning this project as a strategic investment opportunity.
The decision to relocate the project to Engaruka underscores Tanzania’s commitment to sustainable development. By choosing a site that minimizes ecological disruption, the government is demonstrating a balanced approach to industrialization.
Local leaders and community members have expressed hope that the plant will bring infrastructure improvements and economic opportunities to the region. “This is a game-changer for Monduli District. We look forward to the positive impact this project will bring,” said a local official during a community meeting.
The government is optimistic about attracting both local and international investors. The Engaruka Basin soda ash plant is expected to set a benchmark for industrial projects in Tanzania, combining resource exploitation with responsible environmental practices.
Once operational, the plant will strengthen Tanzania’s position as a key player in the global mineral processing market, driving industrialization and sustainable development across the region.
