The Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), Professor Mohamed Janabi, delivered a crucial health advisory today, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a healthy waist circumference to prevent potential health risks.
Addressing participants of the NBC Marathon in Dodoma, Prof. Janabi warned that a waist measurement exceeding 40 inches in men and 35 inches in women could indicate serious health problems. Prof. Janabi highlighted the direct correlation between increased waist circumference and the likelihood of developing non-communicable diseases.
He stressed that excessive abdominal fat is a marker of metabolic syndrome, which heightens the risk for conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. “Exceeding these measurements indicates a higher risk due to excessive weight, which can predispose individuals to chronic health issues,” he stated. Promoting Health Awareness The NBC Dodoma Marathon, which attracted numerous participants, served not only as a sporting event but also as a platform to raise health awareness.
The marathon, flagged off by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa at the Jamhuri Stadium, included health screenings and educational sessions led by health professionals. These sessions were aimed at informing participants about the benefits of physical activity and the importance of regular health check-ups. The event also focused on fundraising efforts to combat cervical cancer and support educational scholarships for midwives, underscoring the marathon’s dual purpose of fostering athletic talent and contributing to crucial social causes.
