The government has made a substantial move to guarantee healthcare access for all demographics in the nation by enforcing Universal Health Coverage. This initiative seeks to offer a lasting and sustainable resolution to enhance healthcare accessibility for every individual, including students.
Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Godwin Mollel, made this statement while responding to a question raised by Member of Parliament for Sikonge, Hon. Joseph Kakunda, who inquired about the importance of the government covering medical expenses for students who fall ill while at school.
Dr. Mollel stated that the government has established a special arrangement through the National Health Insurance Fund, whereby students can enroll in the health insurance scheme through their respective schools by contributing TSH 50,400 per year.

This Health Insurance scheme for students provides an opportunity for them to receive medical services both during their academic year and vacation periods. Its objective is to ensure that students have access to essential healthcare services when needed, without being burdened by the costs of medical treatment. This is a crucial step towards ensuring that students receive quality education while maintaining good health.
It is important to note that the health insurance system operates on the principle of financial contributions by its members for healthcare services. This means that students, along with other groups, will participate in sharing the costs of healthcare services. Dr. Mollel said.
This is different from direct assistance or charity. This insurance mechanism promotes accountability and the involvement of members in ensuring access to healthcare services.
This initiative by the government demonstrates a strong commitment to improving the healthcare sector and ensuring that all citizens have access to quality healthcare services.
Universal Health Coverage is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the healthcare system in the country. Through this system, students and other citizens will have the opportunity to access timely and quality medical treatment, which is essential for their well-being and the overall development of the nation.
