A school bus carrying 15 students burst into flames on the morning of February 27 while on its way to Monticello Middle School in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Fortunately, thanks to the quick thinking of the bus driver, all students were safely evacuated before the fire spread.
The incident happened near the intersection of Cambridge and Northampton roads. According to school officials, the bus driver noticed smoke and flames near one of the rear wheels and acted immediately. Without hesitation, they brought the bus to a stop and swiftly guided all students out to safety. Within minutes, the fire intensified, leaving the bus engulfed in flames.
Superintendent Liz Kirby praised the driver’s actions, stating, “Their quick decision-making ensured that no student was harmed. We are incredibly grateful for their bravery and composure in such a terrifying situation.”
Firefighters from the Cleveland Heights Fire Department arrived quickly and managed to put out the flames. In a statement, the department confirmed that all students had been safely evacuated before the fire could cause any injuries. “The bus driver acted fast, getting everyone off the bus and ensuring they were safe. No one was hurt, and the fire was contained shortly after our arrival,” the statement read.
Another bus was immediately dispatched to pick up the students and take them to school, where they were met by administrators and counselors for support.

As of now, the cause of the fire remains unknown. Authorities are conducting investigations to determine what may have led to the fire. Initial reports suggest it started in the rear wheel area, but further analysis is required.
Superintendent Kirby reassured parents that student safety remains a priority. She mentioned that the bus had passed its annual safety inspection just two weeks earlier, on February 14, and as a precaution, all other buses in the district were re-examined following the incident.
The heroic actions of the bus driver have drawn praise from parents and community members, with many calling them a hero for ensuring all students got out unharmed. The incident has also sparked discussions about the importance of school bus safety measures and regular emergency drills.
While the students and parents are relieved that no one was hurt, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness and the dedication of school staff to student safety.
