Delphin Katembo Vinywasiki, popularly known as Delcat Idengo, was found dead in Goma, a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). #
He was reportedly killed while filming a music video on Thursday, with witnesses saying his body was discovered with blood around his head, suggesting he may have been shot.
Idengo, a well-known figure in Congolese music, was celebrated for his bold songs that often criticized both the government and rebel forces. His music touched on the political and social struggles of his people, with his latest release, “Bunduki” (Swahili for “weapon”), speaking out against the ongoing violence in Goma, which has been under threat from various armed groups.
The violence in the eastern DRC has been escalating for years, as different armed factions, including rebel groups and the national army, fight over control of the region’s mineral wealth. This conflict has displaced hundreds of thousands and resulted in thousands of deaths, leaving many communities devastated.
Government officials were quick to condemn Idengo’s killing. A spokesperson for the Congolese government labeled the incident as an “abominable act” and accused the M23 rebel group of being behind the attack. However, the M23, which has been in conflict with the government for years, has denied these claims, blaming government forces for the incident and calling for their disarmament. This has further fueled tensions in the region.
Idengo’s tragic death has sparked protests, especially in his hometown of Beni, where residents are demanding justice. The Ministry of Arts and Culture in the DRC described the singer’s death as an “assassination,” praising him for giving a voice to the voiceless through his music. His tracks resonated deeply with young people, particularly those who felt forgotten by the political elite.

Before his death, Idengo had faced legal challenges, including accusations of inciting violence against UN peacekeepers and making strong criticisms of President Félix Tshisekedi. In 2021, he was sentenced to ten years in prison, though he was later acquitted. His release came when he, along with other inmates, escaped from a prison that was overrun by M23 rebels.
Opposition leaders have also expressed their sorrow over Idengo’s death, calling it a significant loss for the country. Martin Fayulu, who contested in the 2023 elections, praised Idengo as a true patriot who stood for national unity. Moïse Katumbi, another opposition figure, demanded swift action to identify those responsible for his killing.
“Amazing post, keep up the good work!”
