Travelers using buses to Morogoro have been facing significant challenges in purchasing train tickets, leading them to continue using buses that keep them waiting at stations for extended periods.
The travelers have urged the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) to enhance its efforts in educating the public on how to purchase train tickets easily and reliably.
Many travelers have complained about the TRC’s online ticketing system, describing it as difficult to use and prone to errors, particularly due to the lack of certainty in the train schedules. “Sometimes you find that the tickets have been purchased, but there is no guarantee of transport due to a shortage of carriages or other technical problems,” one traveler explained.
These challenges have stemmed from various issues, including a shortage of carriages and frequent technical faults in the existing carriages. This has made it difficult for many travelers to purchase tickets reliably, causing long waits at stations and sometimes delaying their journeys
The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has stated that it is making efforts to acquire over 40 new carriages to improve services and ensure that travelers can purchase tickets with confidence. TRC’s Director General, Masanja Kadogosa, said that they expect these new carriages to meet the needs of passengers and eliminate the current challenges associated with digital ticketing

Additionally, the government, through the Minister of Works, Transport, and Communication, Isaack Kamwelwe, has promised to address these issues by providing training to TRC employees to efficiently use new technologies and eliminate outdated practices of collecting fares manually. “Some employees are resistant to change, accustomed to collecting fares in the old ways, but this will end as we move towards having enough carriages,” said Minister Kamwelwe
Many travelers have suggested that TRC needs to intensify its efforts to educate the public on how to use the online ticketing system. This includes providing step-by-step instructions on how to purchase tickets and offering support when errors occur. The current online ticket purchasing system through the TRC website still faces many challenges, including frequent errors and unreliable schedules
