Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, has tragically passed away after suffering critical injuries in a brutal fire attack allegedly carried out by her boyfriend.
The incident, which occurred outside her residence in Eldoret, Kenya, left the athlete with severe burns covering nearly 80% of her body.
Cheptegei had been undergoing intensive treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where she was placed on life support after being admitted with extensive burns. Despite the medical team’s efforts, her condition deteriorated, and she succumbed to full organ failure on the morning of Thursday, September 5, 2024.
Dr. Owen Menach, the Director of Clinical Services and Surgery at the hospital, confirmed the athlete’s passing, stating that despite receiving the best care possible, her injuries were too extensive for recovery. “It is a sad morning as we have lost a promising athlete due to organ failure resulting from severe burns,” he stated.
The attack reportedly took place following a domestic dispute between Cheptegei and her boyfriend. According to local police, the assailant doused her with petrol before setting her ablaze. The boyfriend also sustained burns in the process but has been arrested as investigations continue. The motive behind the attack is suspected to be linked to a disagreement between the two.

Cheptegei was known for her impressive athletic career, having competed for Uganda in international competitions. She was an accomplished runner, holding records in marathon races and mountain running. The news of her death has sent shockwaves through the sporting community, with many calling for justice and highlighting the growing issue of domestic violence, particularly in East Africa’s athletic circles.
Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei condemned the attack, urging for harmony and peaceful resolutions in relationships. “The loss of such a talented athlete in such a tragic and preventable manner is devastating. We must collectively speak out against these heinous acts and ensure justice is served,” he said in a statement.
This case mirrors a growing pattern of violence against female athletes in East Africa. In recent years, there have been several similar tragedies, including the murder of Kenyan runner Agnes Tirop in 2021 and road runner Damaris Mutua in 2022.
