In a recent intervie televised on the state-own media, the Minister of Planning and Investment, Professor Kitila Mkumbo, shared remarkable progress in Tanzania’s fight against poverty.
With 25 years of the National Development Vision (2000-2025), the country has successfully reduced its poverty rate to 26%, a significant milestone in the nation’s development journey.
Ahead of the presentation of the government’s main budget for the fiscal year 2024/25, Prof. Mkumbo emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating poverty and achieving middle-income status by 2050.
“The reduction to 26% is a significant achievement, but our ultimate goal is to completely eradicate poverty by 2050,” said Prof. Mkumbo.
He highlighted the positive impact of Vision 2025, which has contributed to notable progress in various sectors, despite facing challenges along the way. Notably, the government’s efforts have led to substantial improvements in rural water access and increased education opportunities.

Regarding education, Prof. Mkumbo noted a remarkable increase in the number of students progressing to secondary education compared to two decades ago. In 2000, less than 10% of primary school graduates had access to secondary education, but now, approximately 70% of students continue their education beyond primary level.
“The transformation in education access reflects the strides we have made in providing opportunities for our youth,” added Prof. Mkumbo.
He emphasized the importance of continued efforts and the need for a new vision beyond 2025. The government is currently gathering public opinions to shape the next phase of development.
“We aim for an upper middle-income economy by 2050, where every Tanzanian will have the opportunity to thrive,” Prof. Mkumbo concluded.
The progress made reflects Tanzania’s unwavering commitment to achieving sustainable development goals and improving the lives of its citizens. Despite challenges, the nation remains focused on its vision for a prosperous and inclusive future.
