The High Court has sentenced businessman Hamis Luwongo to death by hanging after finding him guilty of murdering his wife, Naomi Marijani, in a chilling case that has shocked the nation.
The ruling, delivered on Wednesday, 26 February 2025, by Judge Hamidu Mwanga, concluded that the prosecution had presented overwhelming evidence proving Luwongo’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The court relied on the testimony of 14 witnesses and 10 pieces of evidence, which painted a grim picture of the tragic events that led to Naomi’s death.
The prosecution, led by Principal State Attorney Yasinta Peter and Senior State Attorney Ashura Mnzava, had called for the harshest possible sentence, arguing that the crime was not only brutal but also highlighted the dangers of domestic violence.
“The act committed by the accused was horrific and raises serious concerns about the safety of women in marriage. We urge the court to impose a tough sentence to serve as a warning to others,” said Attorney Mnzava.

According to the case, which was filed under criminal case number 44/2023, Luwongo was accused of killing Naomi on 15 May 2019 at their home in Gezaulole, Kigamboni. The court heard that after committing the crime, he attempted to cover it up by burning her body using charcoal inside a chicken coop. He then buried the remains on his farm and planted banana trees over them to conceal the evidence.
The ruling brings closure to a case that has drawn widespread attention, with many calling for justice for Naomi. The verdict also sends a strong message about the consequences of domestic violence and the importance of protecting victims.
While Luwongo has the right to appeal the decision, for now, the court has spoken—delivering justice for Naomi and highlighting the need for stricter measures to combat gender-based violence.
