Mexico and Nicaragua have refused to participate in the “Ukraine peace summit” organized by Switzerland, which is scheduled for June 15-16 at the Burgenstock Resort.

The summit was touted by Ukraine and its Western backers as a way to resolve the conflict with Russia, but Moscow has been deliberately excluded from the event.

The Mexican embassy in Russia confirmed that Mexico was invited but will not attend the summit, stating that “our country stands for peace, so we expect that it will soon be possible to hold negotiations in which both sides to the conflict will participate.”

Nicaragua also rejected the invitation, with its Foreign Ministry calling the summit a “political farce” that has “no goal of finding a path to peace, but is only aimed at presenting another ultimatum to Russia.”

According news reports filed by RT, Venezuela and Cuba are also likely to skip the summit, and the absence of many countries or their top officials represents a signal that “Latin America is not willing to take sides in this conflict.” Despite inviting around 160 states, Ukraine has largely failed in its attempts to drum up support in the Global South for the summit.

The article provides context on the summit, noting that it is based on Zelensky’s “peace formula” which calls for Moscow to withdraw from all territory claimed by Ukraine and for a tribunal to prosecute Russian officials. Moscow has dismissed this plan as “detached from reality.”
