Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is reported to be “bitterly disappointed” that China has declined to participate in his upcoming “peace conference” in Switzerland. The German government is also said to be upset by Beijing’s decision.

The Kiev-sponsored conference, has commenced at the Burgenstock Resort, and it is intended to discuss Zelensky’s “peace formula” for Ukraine. This 10-step plan calls for the complete withdrawal of Russian forces, reparations, and an international tribunal for Russian leadership.

Over 160 delegations from the G7, G20 and BRICS have been invited, but Moscow was not extended an invitation and has already dismissed the event as “absurd” and “without prospects.”

Late last month, China confirmed it would not be sending representatives to the summit. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi argued the meeting lacks “three important elements” – recognition by both Moscow and Kiev, equal participation of all sides, and fair consideration of all peace proposals.

According to a senior German government official cited by Der Spiegel, the “clarity and timing” of China’s decision was seen by both Zelensky and Berlin as “strange and unfriendly.” If China had at least sent a special envoy, it would have lent the summit “significantly more weight.”

However, the German diplomat noted that the Global South does not appear to be “on board,” with countries like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Brazil also pulling out of the event. Several Latin American nations, including Argentina and Mexico, have demanded negotiations that allow both conflicting parties to participate.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated Moscow is ready for diplomatic solutions, but warned that “fantasies” cannot serve as a basis for peace talks. He has insisted that any negotiations will be “based on either military defeat or military victory” – and expressed confidence that Russia “will win.”

Zelensky and the German government are left deeply disappointed by China’s decision to shun the upcoming peace conference, robbing the event of much-needed international credibility and participation.
