Prominent activist and member of the Democratic Change Party (Chadema), Boniface Jacob, widely recognized by his online alias, Boni Yai, remains in police custody following his arrest on September 18, 2024.
Jacob, who was apprehended in Sinza, Dar Es Salaam, faces allegations of spreading false information a criminal charge that has stirred significant public interest and concern.
Jacob’s lawyer, Hekima Mwasipu, revealed that despite efforts to secure his release, Jacob was denied bail. According to Mwasipu, the Regional Crime Officer (RCO) of Kinondoni, Davis Msangi, explained that he was unable to grant bail due to the nature of the complaint, which originated from the Police Headquarters in Dodoma. This procedural hurdle has left the local police department claiming their “hands are tied,” resulting in Jacob’s continued detention.
“Unfortunately, RCO Msangi informed us that the matter is out of his hands because the complainant is the Police Headquarters in Dodoma. Legally, the police are only allowed to detain a suspect for 24 hours without bail,” Mwasipu said. Jacob was arrested at 4:00 PM on September 18, and as of September 19, his legal team is prepared to pursue legal action to compel the authorities to release him in accordance with Tanzanian law.
David Misime, spokesperson for the Tanzanian Police Force, confirmed Jacob’s detention, highlighting that the accusations involve criminal matters but declined to provide additional information on the nature of the charges. Misime emphasized that the investigation was ongoing.
Jacob’s arrest has garnered widespread attention, particularly from members of his political party and online supporters. As a vocal critic of various government policies, his detention is seen by many as a politically charged move, further fueling public debate on freedom of expression and the treatment of opposition figures in Tanzania.

As the 24-hour legal detention period elapsed without Jacob’s release, his legal team has expressed frustration over the handling of the case. Mwasipu indicated that they will be exploring legal avenues to ensure the police are held accountable for any violations of Jacob’s rights, including his continued detention beyond the prescribed period.
Supporters from Chadema and human rights groups are monitoring the situation closely, with many urging the authorities to provide clarity and ensure a fair legal process. Updates on the case are expected as Jacob’s team prepares to file legal proceedings to secure his release.
