The District Commissioner of Moshi, James Kaji, has expressed deep concern over the escalating alcohol abuse problem in the region.
Speaking at the annual meeting of Social Welfare Officers, he urged them to develop effective strategies to tackle the issue.
Addressing the attendees at the Tanzania Police School (TPS) in Moshi, Commissioner Kaji emphasized the urgent need for interventions. “First, I thank God that you are holding this Social Welfare meeting here. One of our biggest problems is excessive alcohol consumption. I implore you, especially the Social Welfare Officers of Kilimanjaro Region, to address this issue,” he said.
Kaji highlighted the critical role women play in the workforce and noted that the rampant alcohol abuse has a significant impact on their productivity. “The majority of our workforce consists of women, and this alcohol problem is affecting them and the community as a whole,” he added.
The Social Welfare Officers’ meeting, which brings together key stakeholders in social services, is expected to focus on formulating strategies to address social challenges in the Kilimanjaro Region. Alcohol abuse has been identified as a growing problem, particularly among the youth, and its impact is felt across various sectors, including family welfare and community development.
The meeting in Moshi is seen as an opportunity for experts to not only address the immediate concerns but also to establish long-term solutions. “This is a matter that requires a collective effort,” Kaji stated, urging for collaboration between government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the community at large to address the issue.
The Kilimanjaro region, known for its thriving tourism and agricultural sectors, has seen a rise in alcohol-related problems, with reports of increased cases of domestic violence, health complications, and decreased productivity. Social Welfare Officers are tasked with not only providing support but also educating the community about the dangers of alcohol abuse.
