The Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) has officially suspended the operating license of Katarama Luxury buses following allegations of tampering with their vehicle tracking devices (VTD).
The company reportedly removed the original tracking device installed in their buses and replaced it with a fraudulent one, resulting in the transmission of incorrect data to the Vehicle Tracking System (VTS). This serious offense was discovered during an expert investigation, leading LATRA to impose a suspension pending further inquiry.
The tampering incident has raised concerns within LATRA and prompted discussions on the importance of adhering to safety standards and regulations. Katarama Luxury has faced similar penalties in the past, with its license being revoked and later reinstated on several occasions. However, the recurrence of such violations has now led to more severe action.
In addition to Katarama Luxury, other transportation companies, including Abood Bus Service, BM Coach, and Super Feo, were issued warnings to comply with LATRA’s strict laws and safety procedures. Failure to do so could result in further penalties or suspensions. This message was delivered during a meeting held at LATRA’s Dar es Salaam offices on September 12, 2024, attended by stakeholders such as the Tanzania Bus Owners Association (TABOA) and the Traffic Police Unit.

This move underscores the importance of regulatory compliance in the transport industry and the consequences of manipulating essential safety systems.
