President Samia Suluhu Hassan has urged African nations to expedite their shift towards sustainable agriculture to address the challenge of feeding the continent’s rapidly expanding population.
Speaking at the Climate and Food Security meeting in Oslo during her two-day State Visit to Norway, President Samia emphasized Africa’s critical need to adopt more efficient and sustainable agricultural practices. She highlighted the pressing task of adequately feeding a growing and urbanizing population that is often undernourished.
“We must collaborate, innovate, and implement strategies that enable us to meet the current generation’s needs without jeopardizing the needs of future generations,” stated President Samia.
The President stressed that Africa must not only focus on food production but also prioritize creating jobs and generating income for both rural and urban communities through sustainable and equitable agricultural systems and value chains.
President Samia reaffirmed her dedication to partnering with the global community to tackle climate change and enhance food security, both domestically in Tanzania and on a global scale. Tanzania has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30-35% by 2030 as part of its nationally determined contribution.
During the visit, President Samia witnessed the signing of agreements between Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tanzania’s Agriculture Ministry to bolster bilateral cooperation on food security and agriculture. Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences to enhance educational collaboration.
Furthermore, a sub-grant agreement worth 9.9 million Norwegian Kroner (Tshs 2.4 billion) was signed between the Norwegian Institute of Bio Economy Research and the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) to advance education and research on soil management and climate change adaptation.
