The Minister for Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Mr Nape Nnauye, has appointed four members to the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) Board.
A statement issued by the Government Communication Unit in the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Information Technology late on Thursday said the appointments come after President Samia Suluhu Hassan appointed Dr Jones Kilimbe and Juma Reli as the TCRA board’s chairperson and vice chairperson, respectively.
The appointed members, according to the statement, are Prof. Aloys Mvuma, Dr. Hanifa Masawe, Dr. Irene Isaka, and Mohamed Makame.
It added that their appointment is effective since March 21, 2024, for a period of five (5) years.
The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) was established under the TCRA Act No. 12 of 2003 as an independent regulatory body overseeing the postal, broadcasting, and electronic communications sectors. It was formed through the merger of the former Tanzania Communications Commission and the Tanzania Broadcasting Commission and operates under the oversight of the Ministry of Communications and Technology. The development of the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) sector in Tanzania has been shaped by regional, national political, and technological influences. Tanzania stands out as one of the few African countries to have liberalized its communications sector, employing the Converged Licensing Framework (CLF) as a central strategy guided by the Tanzania Communications Regulations. Since its inception in 2003, the TCRA has implemented various regulations to govern the sector, yet it continues to encounter challenges, including expanding services to underserved rural areas.
