President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has called upon regional and district leaders across the country to promote universal health insurance to ensure Tanzanians have guaranteed access to medical services at all times.
Concluding her three-day tour in Rukwa Region on July 17, the President , emphasized the importance of every Tanzanian having health insurance, highlighting it as the best way to ensure consistent access to healthcare regardless of financial status.
President Samia urged leaders to educate citizens on the benefits of health insurance, noting that it offers year-round medical coverage for a single annual payment. She encouraged residents of Rukwa to secure health insurance after their harvests to ensure they can receive medical treatment whenever they face health challenges.
“I urge regional and district leaders to promote health insurance among citizens when they are ready,” President Samia said. “Citizens, on your part, ensure you have health insurance which you pay for once a year and receive treatment all year round. Illnesses can strike at any time, and without insurance, the financial burden can be overwhelming.”
The President also stated that the government has introduced limited funding sources in the budget approved by Parliament to support vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, children, and the elderly.
The Rukwa region, like many other areas in the country, has faced challenges in accessing healthcare services due to a lack of insurance. Considering this, President Samia called on residents of the region and Tanzanians, in general, to see the importance of investing in health insurance as a way to ensure they can access medical services without financial barriers.
In her speech, President Samia reminded citizens that having health insurance is the best way to protect themselves from high medical costs, which can be a significant burden for families when faced with illnesses. She cited the example of farmers who should purchase insurance immediately after their harvest to ensure they receive medical care throughout the year.
President Samia clarified that the government is making every effort to ensure that vulnerable groups receive health insurance through the approved budget funding sources. This includes ensuring that pregnant women, children, and the elderly receive medical services at no cost through the health insurance scheme.
