Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa is set to kick off the 2024 Uhuru Torch Race at the regional level in Kilimanjaro on Tuesday April 2.
The Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner, Mr. Nurdin Babu, announcedthat preparations for the significant event have been finalized.
“This launch holds historical significance as it aligns with the 60th Anniversary of Zanzibar’s Independence, marking 60 years since the inception of the annual nationwide race, and commemorating 60 years of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar,” he explained.

Furthermore, he highlighted that this year’s race, themed ‘Conserve the Environment and Participate in Local Elections for the Building of a Sustainable Nation,’ coincides with the 25th anniversary of the passing of the Father of the Nation, the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, Tanzania’s first president.
Discussing the Uhuru Torch Race in Kilimanjaro, RC Babu mentioned that it will encompass 47 development projects totaling 28.7 billion Tanzanian Shillings in various sectors like health, education, water infrastructure, roads, bridges, and the environment.
He elaborated that out of these projects, 13 will have foundation stones laid, 14 will be officially launched, two will be inaugurated, and 18 will undergo inspection.
“All necessary arrangements for these activities have been finalized; I urge the public to turn out in large numbers for the race launch at Moshi Cooperative University (MoCU) grounds on Tuesday, April 2,” he urged.
Mr. Babu emphasized that the Uhuru Torch Race has been instrumental in educating Tanzanians about their nation’s history, fostering and galvanizing national development initiatives, and promoting unity among citizens.
Tanzania and Zanzibar’s Uhuru Torch Race also marks a significant event that commemorates independence and unity. The race symbolizes the history and solidarity of the nation, promoting development and environmental conservation.
