President Samia Suluhu Hassan has traveled to Paris, France, to participate in the International Clean Cooking Energy Conference for Africa, which will take place on May 14, 2024.
This trip comes shortly after Tanzania launched the National Clean Cooking Energy Usage Strategy on May 8, 2024, in Dar es Salaam.
During this meeting, President Samia will lead the Tanzanian delegation at the African Heads of State Conference on Clean Cooking Energy, to be held at the UNESCO headquarters and attended by other African presidents, including the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, H.E. Julius Maada Bio, and the President of Ghana, H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo.

This trip opens the door to Tanzania’s goal of ensuring that 80% of Tanzanians have access to clean cooking energy.
Statistics show that approximately 33,000 people die each year in the country due to indoor air pollution from cooking smoke.
The issue of clean energy will ensure a significant reduction in these deaths by the year 2034.
President Samia’s trip will open discussions on alternative ways to achieve this goal, through collaboration and dialogue on clean cooking energy during the meeting. It will also open doors for leaders and ministers tasked with finding solutions through various discussions with developed countries including France.
This will help the strategy achieve its goals quickly, ideally before 2034.
Additionally, this trip will open Tanzania to global environmental conservation discussions and enable the country to propose solutions that will benefit especially African countries, which are the most affected by environmental pollution-related deaths.
Given Tanzania’s significant gas production in Africa, addressing the clean cooking energy solution is crucial.
This emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the health of millions of Tanzanians, similar to other developments in various sectors including transportation, education, among others, as a high percentage of deaths in Tanzania are due to cooking smoke.
If the government under President Samia and future presidents prioritize the welfare of its citizens, Tanzania will stand out as one of the leading African countries in the use of clean cooking energy.
