Foreign and regional cooperation ministers from the East African Community (EAC) convened in Zanzibar for a three-day ministerial retreat. The meeting, held from July 6 to 8, was directed by the Heads of State to foster unity and cooperation among member states.
Tanzania’s Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Minister, January Makamba, hosted the retreat. He emphasized the importance of open and honest dialogue to strengthen the EAC for the benefit of its citizens. “We have witnessed the consequences of EAC disintegration in the past and must avoid repeating those mistakes,” Makamba stated, underscoring the need for unity.
The retreat focused on key areas including economic integration, infrastructure development, and regional security. Discussions also addressed the challenges and opportunities within the community, aiming to develop actionable strategies for sustainable growth.
Kenya’s Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, Musalia Mudavadi, praised Tanzania for hosting the meeting and stressed the importance of seizing opportunities for the benefit of the community’s citizens. He highlighted the need for strong leadership and cooperation to navigate the challenges facing the EAC.

During the retreat, ministers reaffirmed their commitment to advancing renewable energy sources and addressing the challenges posed by fossil fuels. This included measures to combat vandalism of electricity infrastructure and enhance regional power connectivity. The EAC Secretariat urged member states to implement mitigation strategies such as regulating scrap metal transactions and community sensitization
Additionally, the ministers discussed the importance of political stability and peace in the region, recognizing that economic growth and development are contingent on a secure and stable environment. The retreat concluded with a collective resolve to strengthen regional ties and work collaboratively towards achieving the EAC’s development goals.
