The President of the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), Advocate Boniphace Mwabukusi, has strongly called for peaceful and democratic elections in Tanzania, emphasizing the need to use ballots and manifestos as the primary tools for political participation, not violence.

Speaking during the opening of a crucial public debate on October 5, 2024, concerning the alarming incidents of citizens disappearing, Mwabukusi underscored the critical role of law and dialogue in the nation’s electoral process.

“We should not hold elections with guns in our hands. We must carry manifestos and ballot papers,” Mwabukusi asserted. His statement came as part of his keynote address at a forum organized to address the growing concern over the disappearance of citizens, an issue that has increasingly troubled civil society organizations and the general public.

Mwabukusi’s comments reflect the broader concerns of many Taned that the essence of elections is the peaceful exchange of ideas and the democratic right to vote freely without fear or intimidation. The call for elections to be conducted in a peaceful and transparent manner comes at a time when human rights organizations and opposition parties are increasingly raising the alarm over political repression and the shrinking civic space in the country.

“The strength of any democracy is measured by the freedom with which its citizens can express their opinions and cast their votes. Guns, violence, and fear have no place in this process,” said Mwabukusi. He also emphasized the importance of dialogue between the government, political stakeholders, and civil society to ensure that Tanzania remains on the path of democracy and respect for human rights.

The forum opened by Mwabukusi, which centered around the troubling trend of citizen disappearances, offered a platform for various stakeholders—including human rights activists, legal experts, and members of the public—to voice their concerns. These incidents of disappearances have created an atmosphere of anxiety in the country, with many speculating that they are politically motivated. The government, on the other hand, has yet to provide satisfactory explanations or resolutions to these cases.

Mwabukusi noted that the role of the legal profession is crucial in addressing such violations of rights, urging his fellow lawyers to remain vigilant and proactive in defending the rights of citizens. “As lawyers, we have a duty to protect the constitution and the rights enshrined in it. No one should disappear simply because they have voiced an opinion or participated in political activities,” he stated.

He also called for increased transparency from the authorities and urged them to ensure thorough investigations into the disappearances. “Every Tanzanian life matters, and it is the responsibility of the state to protect its citizens. Justice must be served in every case where there is suspicion of foul play,” he added.

Advocate Mwabukusi’s remarks come at a critical time when the country is preparing for upcoming elections, and the issue of security and fairness in the electoral process has become a hot topic. The involvement of legal and civil society institutions like the Tanganyika Law Society is seen as pivotal in ensuring that the elections are free from violence and fear, and that all citizens are able to exercise their rights fully.

He concluded his speech by urging Tanzanians to participate actively in the political process but to do so through peaceful means. “Let us choose ballots over bullets. We must build a future where our democracy is strengthened by ideas, not threats, and where our people can vote without fear for their safety,” Mwabukusi said.
