A teacher from Igurwa Primary School, Mr. Adrian Tinchwa, aged 36, is currently in custody following the alleged murder of Phares Buberwa, a 17-year-old Form Three student from Igurwa Secondary School.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the Kagera community, raising serious concerns about violence within educational settings.
The tragic events transpired on September 18, 2024, in Kanoni village, located in Karagwe District. According to Kagera Regional Police Commander Blasius Chatanda, Mr. Tinchwa confronted the student at his home after accusing him of stealing his phone. It is alleged that after discovering the lock on his door broken upon returning home at approximately 9 AM, the teacher found Phares at the door attempting to escape. In a moment of rage, he reportedly assaulted the student by punching him in the forehead and striking him multiple times with an iron bar on his legs and arms.
The assault led to severe injuries, and despite immediate medical attention, Phares tragically succumbed to his injuries later that day. The news of his death has ignited outrage among parents and community members, who are now calling for justice and accountability.
Following the incident, local authorities were quick to respond. Police Commander Chatanda emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating, “Violence, especially against minors, is a crime that will not be tolerated. We are committed to investigating this incident thoroughly to ensure justice is served.” He encouraged community members to remain calm and patient as the legal process unfolds.
The incident has prompted a broader discussion regarding the safety and well-being of students within schools. Parents and community leaders are increasingly alarmed by reports of violence and the urgent need for effective conflict resolution strategies among students and teachers. Many advocates are calling for schools to implement programs that promote dialogue, understanding, and peaceful resolution of conflicts.

Community members have expressed deep concern over the implications of such violence, questioning how a trusted figure could resort to such drastic actions. The loss of Phares Buberwa, a promising young student, has raised serious questions about the values being imparted within educational institutions.
