Local traders and cargo carriers protested against the government’s new crop marketing system by blocking the key Dodoma-Singida-Shinyanga highway.
The protest took place recently when demonstrators used logs and branches to block the road for one hour at Uwanja wa Liti. Their action was in response to the seizure of vehicles transporting crops purchased from rural areas, which were affected by the new “Warehouse Receipt System” (WRS).
Protesters argue that while the WRS aims to streamline crop sales, it falls short due to insufficient public education on how to use the system effectively. Abubakari Francis, a trader involved in the protest, noted that the system’s benefits are undermined by the lack of clear guidance for local farmers. Mohamed Nassoro, another trader, called for the suspension of the WRS for the current season to allow the government time to educate the public on its procedures.

The Singida Regional Police intervened, dispersing the protesters and reopening the blocked highway. The authorities have not yet responded to the concerns raised by the demonstrators.
The protest highlights growing discontent among local traders regarding the WRS and its implementation. There is a pressing need for better public education and support to ensure the system works effectively for both farmers and traders. The government’s response to these issues will be crucial in determining the future of the WRS and its acceptance among the community.
