The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties in Tanzania has ordered leaders of the Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) to cancel a youth forum scheduled to take place tomorrow, Monday, August 12, 2024, at Ruandazove Grounds in Mbeya.
The directive stems from a letter dated August 8, 2024, written by Deputy Registrar of Political Parties, Sisty Nyahoza, to Chadema’s Secretary-General, John Mnyika. The letter cited violations of the Political Parties Act, following statements made by Twaha Mwaipaya, the Publicity Secretary of Chadema’s Youth Wing (Bavicha).

A copy of the letter, sent to the Inspector General of Police, outlines Mwaipaya’s remarks made in a video allegedly circulating online, which calls for mass youth participation and addresses various issues concerning Tanzania’s future.
“Therefore, the Registrar of Political Parties urges Chadema leaders to suspend any activities planned for August 12, 2024, in Mbeya or any other location in the country that you know may lead to violations of law, peace, and order. The remarks made by the Publicity Secretary of Chadema’s Youth Wing in the video contravene the Political Parties Act and suggest that the gathering could be used to incite youth to engage in unlawful acts, similar to what occurred in Kenya,” the letter stated.
The Registrar has also summoned Chadema Chairman Freeman Mbowe, Secretary-General John Mnyika, and Bavicha Chairman John Pambalu to appear at the Registrar’s Office in Dar es Salaam on August 13, 2024, at 11:00 AM to address the matter.
