A woman identified as Irene, a resident of Moivaro Ward in Arusha, was found dead on September 10, 2024, following a failed attempt to terminate her pregnancy.
Neighbors, who became concerned when Irene did not emerge from her home in the morning, broke into her room and discovered her lifeless body. A male infant, believed to be her newborn, was found underneath a couch.
Irene, a mother of three daughters, had reportedly been struggling with the pressures of single motherhood, raising her children without the support of a partner. These challenges may have driven her to attempt the abortion, which authorities believe was conducted unsafely, leading to her death.
Witnesses expressed their sorrow over the tragic event, stating that Irene was a hardworking woman overwhelmed by the difficulties of parenting alone.
