Former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi, who also serves as the Chancellor of Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), has appointed Prof. Appolinary Kamuhabwa as the Vice-Chancellor of MUHAS for a five-year term.
A statement from MUHAS’s Communication and Marketing Unit on Saturday announced that Prof. Kamuhabwa’s appointment became effective on January 2, 2024.
Previously, Prof. Kamuhabwa served as the Acting Vice-Chancellor since June 1, 2023.
Prof. Kamuhabwa, a Professor of Pharmacology in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology at MUHAS, holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Dar es Salaam. He completed his Masters, PhD, and Postdoctoral Fellowship in Pharmacology at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. He was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2016 at MUHAS.
The new Vice-Chancellor of MUHAS has an extensive publication record with over 110 papers in peer-reviewed journals. His research spans various therapeutic areas, including infectious and non-infectious diseases such as Bladder Cancer, HIV, malaria during pregnancy, neglected tropical diseases, and cardiovascular diseases.
Before assuming his new role, Prof. Kamuhabwa held various administrative positions at MUHAS. He served as the Director of Planning and Development from 2007 to 2015, overseeing the establishment of Mloganzila Campus, including resource mobilization for the construction and operationalization of the state-of-the-art University Teaching Hospital.
Additionally, he served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor responsible for Planning, Finance, and Administration (2015-2017), Acting Vice-Chancellor (2017-2018), and Deputy Vice-Chancellor responsible for Academic, Research, and Consultancy (2018-2023).
