The Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) in Dar Es Salaam is set to revolutionize cardiac care by conducting advanced coronary artery surgeries using the Cathlab machine, which allows procedures without traditional open-heart surgery.
This initiative will benefit around 15 patients during a special seven-day camp, facilitated by experts from JKCI and the African Doctors Association in the United States.
Dr. Kawajika Mwinyipembe, a cardiologist at JKCI, emphasized the significance of this collaboration. The modern medical equipment, designed to address up to 99% blocked heart blood vessels, marks a substantial upgrade from previous camps where surgeries were sometimes hindered due to inadequate resources. This camp not only aims to treat patients but also to foster knowledge exchange between local and international cardiology experts.
JKCI has made remarkable strides since its inception in 2015, becoming a beacon of hope for patients with cardiovascular conditions. With a comprehensive range of services including diagnostics, interventional cardiology, and cardiothoracic surgery, the institute handles over 200 outpatient visits daily, with approximately six Cathlab procedures and two to three major surgeries performed every day.

Looking ahead, JKCI is preparing to launch heart transplants within the next five years. Dr. Peter Kisenge, JKCI’s executive director, outlined the strategic plans supported by a budget of TZS 66.3 billion for the 2023/24 financial year. This preparation includes extensive professional training and infrastructure development to ensure that the institute can offer heart transplants domestically, reducing the need for patients to seek expensive treatments abroad.
Dr. Kisenge also highlighted the institute’s financial impact. Treating patients locally has saved the government billions of shillings. For instance, in the past year alone, the cost of treating 2,760 patients at JKCI was about half of what it would have been if they had sought treatment abroad. Additionally, JKCI has begun to attract patients from neighboring countries, further establishing its reputation as a regional center of excellence in cardiac care.
The success of JKCI’s programs is a testament to the dedication of its staff and the strategic partnerships that enhance its capabilities. This upcoming camp and the future heart transplant program represent significant milestones in Tanzania’s journey towards self-sufficiency in advanced medical care, ensuring that high-quality cardiac treatments are accessible and affordable for all
