Tanzania has called upon the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to strengthen its partnership in advancing the nation’s clean cooking energy agenda.
Christina Mndeme, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Vice President’s Office (Environment), delivered this appeal during the 11th Annual Subcommittee meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of UNEP in Nairobi, Kenya.
Mndeme emphasized the urgency of addressing environmental degradation caused by the widespread use of firewood and charcoal in cooking practices across Tanzania. These traditional fuels not only contribute significantly to deforestation but also pose health risks due to indoor air pollution. Transitioning to cleaner energy sources is seen as crucial not only for environmental conservation but also for improving public health and well-being.
Highlighting the benefits of UNEP’s support, Mndeme outlined Tanzania’s efforts to promote renewable energy solutions and efficient cooking technologies. These initiatives aim to reduce dependence on unsustainable fuel sources and promote sustainable practices among households and communities.

Beyond clean cooking energy, Mndeme urged UNEP to collaborate with Tanzania on expanding carbon trading mechanisms and fostering the blue economy. These sectors offer promising avenues for economic growth and sustainable resource management, aligning with global efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The appeal reflects Tanzania’s commitment to integrating environmental sustainability into its national development agenda. By seeking UNEP’s partnership, Tanzania aims to leverage international expertise and resources to accelerate its transition towards a greener and more resilient economy.
UNEP’s response to Tanzania’s appeal is eagerly anticipated as stakeholders await further details on potential areas of collaboration and support. The outcome of this dialogue could pave the way for enhanced international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development across the region.
