The government of Equatorial Guinea has announced immediate suspensions of officials allegedly involved in sexual misconduct within public office spaces.
Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue issued the directive, saying those responsible for violating public office ethics by engaging in inappropriate relationships and allowing the release of explicit videos will face strict disciplinary action.
In recent weeks, over 300 leaked videos reportedly show various public officials, including a senior finance agency head, engaging in explicit acts within government buildings. The videos, alleged to have involved the Director-General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), depict encounters with multiple women, including relatives of other officials and senior government members, casting a harsh light on the country’s government offices and the internal ethical breaches within them.
Nguema emphasized that this misconduct represents a direct violation of the public code of conduct, stressing the importance of moral integrity among public servants and underscoring his administration’s policy of zero tolerance toward actions that damage the government’s image. He asserted that government efforts would prioritize rooting out actions that compromise both public trust and institutional integrity.
The government’s statement also hinted at a broader crackdown on breaches of public decorum, suggesting it as part of a larger campaign to reinforce ethics and discipline in governance.
With corruption and ethics already significant issues under the country’s ruling party, such incidents add pressure on Nguema’s administration, particularly amid international scrutiny and concerns over transparency within Equatorial Guinea’s governing body.
