Residents of Itilima District in Simiyu Region are finally finding some relief after authorities launched an operation to deal with a growing hyena threat that had left the community in fear.
In recent weeks, these predators had been attacking villagers, with tragic cases of children being mauled.
The operation, led by local authorities in collaboration with wildlife officials, resulted in the elimination of 17 hyenas. Regional Commissioner Kenani Kihongosi confirmed the development, saying the government had no choice but to act swiftly to protect lives.
“This was a necessary step. The safety of our people comes first,” Kihongosi stated.
The attacks had become a major concern, with reports of hyenas wandering into villages, targeting livestock, and even attacking children. One heartbreaking case involved a three-year-old child who was fatally mauled in Munze Village, sending shockwaves through the community.
However, one particular discovery has left many puzzled. During the operation, authorities came across a hyena with a human name inscribed on its thigh and adorned with beads around its neck. The strange finding has sparked discussions about cultural beliefs and whether some individuals may have been keeping hyenas for ritualistic purposes.

District Commissioner Anna Gidarya has urged residents to work with authorities, particularly in identifying individuals who might be involved in such activities.
“We cannot allow our people to live in fear. If anyone knows something, they should come forward so we can put an end to this danger,” she said.
For now, the community is regaining its sense of security, but authorities insist that vigilance is still needed. They have assured residents that they will continue monitoring the situation to prevent further incidents.
