A recent investigation has revealed shocking financial mismanagement at the Manyema Mosque in Kariakoo, Dar es Salaam, with over Sh2 billion in assets reportedly embezzled.
The findings, which were made public by Rita’s CEO, Mr. Frank Kanyusi, followed a thorough audit of the mosque’s finances and property.
Mr. Kanyusi confirmed that the audit uncovered not only significant financial mismanagement but also the loss of valuable assets, including plots of land. He said those responsible for the embezzlement and abuse of power would be handed over to the authorities for further legal action.
“The investigation has revealed mismanagement exceeding Sh2 billion, alongside a loss of assets and a clear abuse of power,” said Mr. Kanyusi. “We will ensure that all those involved face the full consequences of their actions.”
The investigation was sparked by complaints from mosque members and leaders who had suspected financial wrongdoing. The issue came to light during a meeting held on July 9, 2024, where officials from the Muslim Council of Tanzania (Bakwata) and the dissolved Board of Trustees discussed the mosque’s situation. This led Rita to step in and take the necessary steps to verify the allegations.
Mr. Kanyusi explained that, under the Trustees Registration Act, he had appointed a team to review the mosque’s financial practices, check the legitimacy of its assets, and ensure that its revenue collection adhered to the law.
“We are dedicated to ensuring that every institution we oversee is operating honestly and in compliance with the law,” he said. “We urge all Trustees to be responsible, manage their assets properly, and avoid any legal trouble.”

Bakwata’s representative, Mr. Rashid Salam, reassured the public that they would continue working with Rita to ensure institutions follow proper procedures. “We want to make sure that these organizations manage their assets with integrity and respect national laws,” said Mr. Salam.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Transitional Committee of Manyema Mosque, Mr. Said Bakari Isihaka, said that mosque members are now waiting for the next steps and legal instructions to ensure accountability.
The findings of this investigation highlight the importance of transparency in managing public resources, especially within religious institutions.
