The Ministry of Health has reassured the public about the country’s safety from Mpox, also known as monkeypox, amid increasing global concern.
In a comprehensive update, the Ministry has highlighted preventive measures to help keep the disease at bay.
According to the latest public notice issued by Englibert Kayombo, Acting Head of the Government Communication Unit, the disease has been reported in 116 countries worldwide, with a total of 97,745 cases and 203 deaths from May 2022 to May 2024. Mpox, which is caused by the Mpox virus, spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids and contaminated surfaces. This includes saliva, mucus, sweat, urine, and respiratory droplets, as well as through direct skin contact with infected individuals or contaminated items like bedding and clothing.
Englibert Kayombo emphasized that Mpox is transmitted primarily through close contact with infected persons or contaminated materials. The Ministry of Health is actively monitoring the situation and has implemented a series of precautionary measures to prevent the outbreak within the country. These measures include enhancing public awareness about the disease and educating citizens on effective hygiene practices.

The Ministry is urging the public to follow these key preventive steps:
1.Maintain Good Hygiene: Regular hand washing with soap and water is essential. Hand sanitizers should be used when soap and water are not available. Personal hygiene plays a crucial role in preventing the spread of Mpox.
2.Avoid Close Contact: Individuals should avoid close physical contact with those who exhibit symptoms of Mpox. This includes staying away from people who have been diagnosed with the disease or showing signs of illness.
3.Use Protective Gear: Wearing masks and gloves can help prevent the spread of the virus, particularly when handling items that may be contaminated or when interacting with potentially infected individuals.
4. Seek Medical Advice: People who experience symptoms consistent with Mpox or who have been in contact with someone diagnosed with the disease should seek medical attention immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing the disease effectively.
In addition to these measures, the Ministry of Health is collaborating with international health organizations to ensure ongoing surveillance and response capabilities. Public health campaigns are being launched to educate citizens about the symptoms of Mpox and the importance of preventive practices.
