Tanzania is set to host the 20th-anniversary celebrations of the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC-AU) on May 25, 2024, at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Hon. January Makamba (MP) clarified that this hosting opportunity followed the decisions made at the 37th African Union Heads of State and Government Summit held in February 2024 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
“It should be noted that in March 2022, Tanzania was elected to serve as a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council for two years until March 2024, when the term came to an end. Consequently, Tanzania has been re-elected to serve on the Council for another two-year term until 2026,” said the Minister.

He stated that the Peace and Security Council is the highest decision-making body on issues of peace and security within the African Union, with the responsibility of preventing conflicts, mediating, or addressing them when they arise.
The Minister noted that only 15 out of the 55 member countries of the African Union are members of the Council, adding that the current members include: Tanzania, Uganda, and Djibouti (East African Region); Cameroon, DRC, and Equatorial Guinea (Central Region); South Africa, Angola, and Botswana (Southern Region); Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone (West African Region); and Egypt and Morocco (North African Region).
“Thus, Tanzania’s membership on this Council is a sign of respect and trust in our country, which has led to our nation being given the greater responsibility of chairing the Council in May. As Chair, Tanzania is tasked with overseeing all activities related to the Council, including closely monitoring the state of peace and security across the African continent, providing guidance on addressing security issues when necessary, and preparing schedules and leading Council meetings,” said Minister Makamba.
