Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted a meeting with his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, at the Kremlin last night.
This was the first in-person meeting between the two leaders in several years, coming at a time of heightened instability in the region.
In his opening remarks, President Putin expressed his pleasure at seeing President al-Assad, noting that it had been “a long time” since their last encounter. He acknowledged the “difficult trials” and “complex transformation processes” their countries have weathered over the past decades, but stressed that the Russia-Syria relationship has remained anchored in “trust” throughout.

Putin stated that the meeting provided an important opportunity to discuss the “current developments in the world, and in particular in the Eurasian region,” as well as to explore potential “outlooks and scenarios” going forward. For his part, President al-Assad highlighted the significance of the meeting falling on the anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Syria. He characterized the longstanding ties between the two nations as an “evidence of our nations’ maturity,” even as they have navigated “difficult trials” together.
The closed-door talks were expected to delve into the complex security and political dynamics unfolding across the Middle East. Russia has maintained a strong strategic alliance with Syria, providing critical military support to the Assad government during the country’s civil war. The two leaders were likely to coordinate positions on issues such as the conflict in Ukraine, the tensions between Iran and Israel, and the broader geopolitical competition in the region.
