They assert that the alarming frequency of accidents endangers lives, particularly impacting students who struggle to navigate the road safely.
Locals have noted that despite the heavy traffic flow, there are insufficient road signs to mitigate the risks of accidents. In response, they are calling on the government to take decisive action by installing adequate traffic signage and speed bumps to enhance safety for the community, especially for young students.
“It’s extremely perilous, especially during school hours. Our students face enormous challenges crossing this road, and we often have to halt our activities just to help them cross safely,” expressed a concerned resident.
Samson Andrea, a motorcycle taxi driver operating in the Bango area, that accidents have become alarmingly common. Recently, two young individuals were struck and killed by a vehicle, while another motorcycle taxi driver remains in critical condition following a collision.
Further complicating the situation, residents noted that public transport vehicles frequently disregard designated stopping points, contributing to road congestion. Local traders, including food vendors, also highlighted the difficulties they face crossing the road to conduct their business due to the risk of being hit by vehicles.
“We are pleading for speed bumps or pedestrian crossings. We cannot safely cross to conduct business because we are afraid of getting run over,” lamented Teresia, a local food vendor.
After hearing the community’s grievances, Jambo TV reached out to Dodoma District Commissioner Mr. Jabir Shekimweri for comment. In a response via WhatsApp, he indicated that he has escalated the issue to the Tanzania Roads Authority (TANROADS) through the Acting Regional Manager, requesting that it be addressed in accordance with traffic safety regulations.
Additionally, William Mwakatobe, the Head of the Dodoma Regional Traffic Safety Unit, has urged TANROADS to install necessary road signs and implement other safety measures to protect pedestrians and motorists alike.
