Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, has emphasized the long-standing relationship between Tanzania and Singapore, highlighting the need for both countries to review the reasons behind their partnership and increase trade between them.
Dr. Biteko made these remarks on October 21, 2024, during his visit to Singapore, after meeting with Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Gan Kim Yong.
“We need to learn from this relationship, especially from Singapore, as you have made significant progress in the energy sector, reaching over 8 gigawatts of electricity capacity. This is a large amount compared to Tanzania’s approximately 3,000 megawatts. By 2030, we plan to reach 10,000 megawatts,” said Dr. Biteko.
He stressed, “This plan cannot materialize without partnerships and cooperation with stakeholders and other countries like Singapore. We hope to see this collaboration grow and benefit our citizens.”

Dr. Biteko also praised Singapore for its solar energy production and stated that Tanzania continues its efforts to generate solar power.
Discussing ongoing energy projects, Dr. Biteko mentioned that Tanzania is currently implementing a major project that will generate 2,115 megawatts. Additionally, feasibility studies are underway for various other energy production projects.
Furthermore, Dr. Biteko extended an invitation to Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Yong, to visit Tanzania. “On behalf of the Government and President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, we would be delighted to welcome you to Tanzania, and we believe there are many areas where we can collaborate,” he said.
In response, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Yong, affirmed his country’s readiness to continue cooperating with Tanzania, noting that the two nations share similar needs.
He added that Singapore relies primarily on natural gas, while also utilizing hydroelectric, solar, and wind power. He expressed Singapore’s willingness to work with Tanzania in exchanging experiences on various issues related to the energy sector.
