The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has officially received two upgraded weather radar systems based in Mwanza and Dar Es Salaam.
The enhancements were performed by Enterprises Electronic Corporation (EEC) from Alabama, USA.
These upgrades, funded by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania through its development budget, are designed to enhance the performance of the radar systems, which have been in use for over a decade. The modernization involved replacing outdated technology (edge 5) with advanced equipment (edge 6) to ensure clearer and more easily interpretable images. This improvement is vital as it aligns with the technology used in newly installed weather radars in the regions of Mtwara, Mbeya, and Kigoma, promoting integration within the Multi-Agency Integrated Radar System (MOZAIC).
During the handover ceremony at the Dar Es Salaam radar office, Mr. Masoud Faki, the Acting Director of TMA and representative of the TMA Director General, expressed his satisfaction with the upgraded equipment. He highlighted the enhanced capabilities of the Bangulo radar in Dar es Salaam, which can now provide better monitoring of severe weather events for the Northern Coastal region, including the early detection of cyclones at sea to alert local communities.
“I am very pleased with how these instruments have been upgraded, enabling the radar systems to operate with high-resolution imagery, even extending out to sea. We anticipate these improvements will help us predict severe weather conditions and protect our communities from potential disasters,” Mr. Masoud stated.

He also extended his gratitude to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania for its ongoing commitment to improving weather infrastructure, including the procurement and installation of three additional weather radars in Mtwara, Kigoma, and Mbeya. With these upgrades, Tanzania now boasts a total of five operational radars, with plans to expand the network to seven across the country.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in Tanzania’s ability to monitor and predict weather patterns, ultimately enhancing disaster preparedness and community safety.
