Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud travelled to Qatar on Monday, engaging in what appeared to be a diplomatic shuttle, which comes amid Ethiopia’s expansionist ambitions bearing consequences for Somalia.
In a high-level meeting in Doha, Somali President and Qatari Emir Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani reaffirmed their nations’ strong bilateral ties and voiced firm opposition to the recent agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland.
Mohamud expressed deep gratitude for Qatar’s “fraternal decision” to uphold Somalia’s unity and independence. He praised Qatar for being among the “brotherly countries” taking a clear stance against the deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland.
Emir reaffirmed Qatar’s support for the Somali government, emphasizing “the potential dangers of regional instability”. He warned that dividing Somalia could cause significant security implications for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
