A man detonated explosives in an apparent suicide outside Brazil’s Supreme Court on Wednesday, sparking heightened security concerns just days before the country is set to host the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
The tragic incident unfolded in the evening when two explosions occurred in quick succession outside the court building, creating panic and raising fears about security readiness ahead of the major international event.
Authorities revealed that the first blast erupted in a parking lot adjacent to the Supreme Court, followed by a second explosion just outside the court’s entrance, where the body of the deceased man was later discovered. According to Federal District Vice Governor Celina Leao, initial information suggests that the man tried to enter the court building before detonating the explosives. Further investigation revealed that the man owned a nearby vehicle, whose trunk was forced open by yet another blast.
Leao addressed the incident, expressing hopes that the act was a “lone wolf” attack but acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the situation. “We cannot confirm that he acted alone at this stage,” she noted, highlighting concerns that the incident could be a signal of broader security threats as Brazil prepares to welcome G20 leaders and subsequently, Chinese President Xi Jinping in Brasilia.
The Supreme Court and other nearby governmental buildings immediately heightened their security measures, although law enforcement officials have urged caution while investigations are ongoing. The police are withholding the identity of the deceased until they complete a thorough examination of the body, particularly due to concerns about the possible presence of additional explosives.
Police and explosive ordnance disposal teams have cordoned off the area and are carefully searching for any potential secondary devices. Forensic teams are also on the scene, piecing together evidence from the damaged vehicle and other materials linked to the attack.
