Tensions between Russia and the United Kingdom have intensified after Moscow accused Britain of playing a key role in prolonging the war in Ukraine.
The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) claimed that the UK has been the “main instigator” behind the ongoing conflict, drawing comparisons to its involvement in past global wars.
In a strongly worded statement, Russian officials accused London of pushing for further escalation rather than supporting diplomatic efforts to end the fighting. “The UK, just as it did before both World Wars, is once again fueling a major global conflict,” the SVR claimed. Russian authorities went further, alleging that Britain was actively undermining U.S.-led efforts to negotiate a peaceful resolution in Ukraine.
The British government swiftly dismissed these accusations, calling them “completely baseless and absurd.” A spokesperson from the UK Prime Minister’s office stated, “Russia is solely responsible for the war in Ukraine. These false claims are just another attempt to shift the blame away from their own actions.”
The latest diplomatic clash comes amid worsening relations between Russia and the UK. Recently, Moscow expelled two British diplomats, accusing them of espionage. London condemned the move, calling it an “unjustified provocation” and warning that Russia’s claims were part of a larger disinformation campaign aimed at dividing Western allies.
The UK has been one of Ukraine’s most vocal supporters since the war began, providing military aid and training for Ukrainian forces. British officials argue that their support is necessary to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty and push back against Russian aggression. However, Moscow sees this assistance as direct interference and claims it has prolonged the conflict.
The accusations against the UK are also linked to broader geopolitical tensions. Russian officials have suggested that Britain is working against U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace efforts, which have included talks with Russian leaders about possible ceasefire agreements. While no formal peace deal has been reached, discussions between U.S. and Russian officials continue, with both sides trying to find common ground on issues like security in the Black Sea region.

Meanwhile, in Washington, the situation has sparked mixed reactions. Some American politicians remain skeptical of Russia’s intentions, with U.S. Senator John Cornyn warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin “cannot be trusted.” His remarks highlight divisions within the U.S. government, where some believe a tougher stance is needed against Moscow, while others are open to diplomatic negotiations.
As the conflict in Ukraine drags on, the growing war of words between Russia and the UK adds another layer of complexity to the crisis. With both sides standing firm in their positions, the chances of de-escalation remain uncertain. However, diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes, as world leaders attempt to navigate one of the most dangerous geopolitical standoffs in recent history.
