The Chairperson of the National Women’s Union (UWT) Mary Chatanda, has issued a strong message to lawmakers and local councilors, urging them to serve the entire community, not just those who helped them secure their positions.
Chatanda shared these remarks during a ceremony in Ruvuma, where she distributed a variety of helpful items aimed at boosting local productivity. These included sunflower oil extraction machines, grinders, gas stoves, dairy cattle, bicycles for people with disabilities, and cement bags for different groups in the region.
While speaking to the attendees, Chatanda also warned regional and district UWT secretaries against pressuring MPs to distribute money or gifts, such as kitenge fabrics, to constituents in the lead-up to next year’s elections. “Such actions go against the duties you’ve been entrusted with,” she said, stressing that leadership should always be about the community’s welfare, not personal gain.
Encouraging local women to take full advantage of the resources provided, Chatanda emphasized the importance of using the equipment to improve agricultural production. “You’ve just received 700 new mills, in addition to the 500 that were given to you earlier. Make sure you put these to good use to improve your businesses and families,” she advised.

The event highlighted the UWT’s ongoing commitment to supporting women in the region. By providing these tools, Chatanda hopes to empower them economically, especially in sectors like agriculture. She encouraged the women to use the opportunity to increase their income and support their communities.
Chatanda also touched on the importance of political leaders staying focused on their constituents’ needs, rather than catering to personal or political interests. With the election year approaching, she hopes her message will inspire leaders to remain accountable and committed to public service.
