Tanzania has received three electric locomotives and an additional 27 new wagons for its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project that has been delayed for months. The inaugural journey is now expected at the end of January 2024.
In a statement on Saturday, Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) Spokesperson, Jamila Mbarouk, said the new consignment makes a fleet of four (4) out of the 17 locomotives to be delivered by South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem Company (HRC).
Another South Korea’s firm has thus delivered 56 out of 59 wagons. TRC said the remaining locomotives and Wagons are set to be delivered next year.
“The remaining three wagons will arrive in Tanzania in February next year,” read part of the statement. Jamila explained that the 13 other locomotives will be delivered in the country between March and April, 2024. Six locomotives are expected in March and the seven others will arrive by April.
TCR also anticipates HRC to supply the first batch of EMU trains in March next year.
Tanzania expects the SGR will help link with the neighbouring land-locked countries.
