Tanzanians are celebrating Christmas today as the annual event comes amidst significant increases in food prices, forcing many to dig deeper into their pockets.

Citizens are bracing for even higher costs, with essential goods showing no signs of returning to previous prices in the near future.

Media Wire Express conducted a random market survey this week in Dar es Salaam to examine the rising prices of essential goods.

Among the most notable increases is the price of beef, which has surged to between Sh11,000 and Sh12,000 per kilogram, up from a maximum of Sh9,000 per kilogram in the last two weeks.

Garlic prices at Buguruni have also skyrocketed, now costing Sh17,000 per kilogram compared to the previous price of Sh7,000, according to vendors.

The price of sweet potatoes has also increased, with a sado now selling for Sh6,000, up from Sh3,500. However, rice remains relatively affordable, ranging between Sh1,600 and Sh2,500 per kilogram, depending on its quality.

Meanwhile, sugar prices have remained stable at between Sh2,800 and Sh3,000 per kilogram, while maize flour is priced between Sh12,000 and Sh14,000 per kilogram.
