The 8th Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Oceans, Inland Waters, and Fisheries of the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is concluding today at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC).
The gathering, which began on September 9, brought together ministers from 78 nations to discuss key issues related to the blue economy, focusing particularly on the fishing sector and sustainable management of aquatic resources.
The event was marked by the presence of high-level delegations, including the European Commission’s Director General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Ms. Charlina Vitcheva. The European Union has played a vital role in supporting Tanzania’s initiatives in the blue economy, with funding aimed at enhancing sustainable coastal management, economic growth, and marine conservation. The meeting also emphasized the importance of developing climate-resilient coastal economies, protecting ecosystems, and fostering long-term policy reforms.
The blue economy is increasingly seen as a major driver of economic growth for coastal and island nations. This meeting presented an opportunity for participants to collaborate on strategies to protect aquatic resources and promote sustainable business models.

This event also highlights Tanzania’s commitment to leading blue economy initiatives in the region, with President Samia Suluhu Hassan presiding over the opening session.
