Zelensky Open to Resignation for Peace or NATO Entry

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he is willing to step down if doing so would help bring peace to his country or secure Ukraine’s long-sought membership in NATO.

His remarks come as the war with Russia nears its third year, with continued attacks devastating Ukraine’s cities and infrastructure.

Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, Zelensky made it clear that his priority remains Ukraine’s security and future. “If stepping down is what’s needed for peace, I am ready. If my resignation would bring Ukraine into NATO, I could do that,” he stated. His words reflect the growing pressure on Ukraine’s leadership to find a lasting solution to the ongoing war.

His comments also follow recent criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who referred to Zelensky as a “dictator” for leading Ukraine without holding elections. Since Russia invaded in February 2022, Ukraine has been under martial law, which prevents elections from taking place. Zelensky responded calmly to Trump’s remarks, saying, “A real dictator would be the one who gets offended.”

Despite the war, Zelensky remains popular in Ukraine, with recent surveys showing that 63% of Ukrainians still support his leadership. However, there are ongoing concerns about when the country will be able to hold democratic elections again.

Meanwhile, the war itself continues to escalate. In one of the largest drone attacks since the invasion began, Russia launched over 260 drones in a single night, causing significant destruction and casualties. Zelensky praised Ukraine’s emergency response teams for their efforts and once again urged the international community to provide more support.

In the coming days, Western leaders are expected to gather in Kyiv to discuss Ukraine’s future, including its potential NATO membership. While Zelensky’s willingness to step down may be seen as a bold gesture, it remains unclear whether such a move would change the course of the war.
