Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Doto Biteko has called for effective utilization of the revised National Trade Policy to enhance the competitiveness of Tanzanian products in regional and global markets. Speaking at the policy launch in Dar es Salaam, Dr. Biteko emphasized the need for trade facilitators to leverage the new policy to eliminate trade barriers and establish a robust legal framework that promotes business activity.

Addressing a diverse audience that included diplomats, cabinet ministers, top government officials, and trade sector stakeholders, Dr. Biteko underscored the government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for business growth. He highlighted that government officials should play a supportive role in business development rather than creating obstacles, a concern he noted as prevalent in the current system.

“Officials must not take pleasure in hindering business progress,” Dr. Biteko stated. “This practice must change to ensure the trade sector significantly contributes to our national income.”

The revised National Trade Policy is designed to simplify trade processes, facilitate business activities, and enhance export contributions to the national economy. Dr. Biteko’s appeal aligns with the broader governmental agenda of fostering a more competitive and vibrant trade environment.

During the launch event, Dr. Biteko outlined the critical elements of the policy, which include reducing bureaucratic red tape, improving infrastructure, and enhancing market access for local products. He stressed the importance of adopting modern technologies and refining business strategies to ensure competitiveness.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s remarks also touched on the need for upskilling small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to better compete in the global market. He pointed out that in developed countries, SMEs contribute significantly to the economy, while in Tanzania, the sector’s contribution remains modest. Dr. Biteko urged SMEs to embrace modern technologies and innovative practices to enhance their productivity and market reach.

In his address, Dr. Biteko also called for the establishment of specialized funds to support the implementation of the new trade policy. He noted that the government is committed to providing the necessary resources and support to ensure the policy’s success.

The revised policy is expected to drive economic growth by making Tanzanian products more competitive on the global stage. By addressing trade barriers and fostering a supportive business environment, the government aims to increase the country’s export contributions and boost overall economic performance.09:48
