Zanzibar’s President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has assured the United Kingdom that the island is making significant strides in controlling and eliminating Trachoma, a major public health concern.
This commitment was articulated during a meeting at the State House in Zanzibar with Princess Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, who is visiting for six days to inspect various health projects supported by institutions under her patronage.
During the discussions, President Mwinyi emphasized that Zanzibar’s progress in tackling various diseases is largely due to substantial health assistance from the UK. He expressed gratitude for the continued support and reiterated the government’s determination to combat diseases, particularly non-communicable diseases (NCDs) that threaten community well-being.
The President assured Princess Sophie that Zanzibar is prioritizing improvements in health services, specifically in maternal and child health care. He urged donors and development partners to maintain their support for Zanzibar’s health initiatives.
In response, Princess Sophie praised Zanzibar for its remarkable achievements in controlling Trachoma, noting that the island has made significant progress towards meeting the Commonwealth’s target of eliminating the disease by 2030. Her acknowledgment reflects the collaborative efforts between Zanzibar and international partners in public health.
