The Yanga Sports Club community has been struck by the tragic news of the passing of its former Chairman and benefactor, Yusuf Manji. The announcement was made by the club’s leadership, expressing profound sorrow and shock at the loss of a figure who played a pivotal role in the club’s history.
Manji, who passed away on June 30, 2024, in the United States while undergoing medical treatment, is remembered for his dedicated service to the club. Eng. Hersi Said, the current president of Yanga, highlighted Manji’s significant contributions, describing him as a committed and passionate leader. Said stated, “Yusuf Manji was an industrious leader who dedicated his efforts and resources to building our club. His passing is a substantial loss to Young Africans Sports Club and the broader sports community.”
During his tenure, Manji served in various leadership capacities, including as a trustee and chairman. His influence extended beyond administrative duties, as he was known for his deep affection for the club and his substantial financial support, which was crucial in advancing Yanga’s standing in Tanzanian football.

Manji’s leadership was not without its challenges. His tenure saw moments of controversy, such as his resignation in 2017 following internal conflicts and his ongoing legal battles, including a high-profile case involving allegations of illicit drug use. Despite these issues, his impact on the club remains undeniable. His resignation, partly due to disagreements within the club’s influential circles, left a significant mark on Yanga’s administration
The club has expressed its condolences to Manji’s family, friends, and the entire sports community, emphasizing the lasting legacy he leaves behind. “We pray for his soul to rest in peace and for strength for his family during this difficult time,” said the club’s official statement.
